Saturday August 30, 2008 US AMBASSADOR TO CAMBODIA DEPARTS Joseph A. Mussomeli the Ambassador to Cambodia departed early in the week after a three year stint on the job. Mussomeli noted that he noticed the Cambodian people are more relaxed than they were when he arrived. Contrary to what some know it all NGO personnel who said that Mussomeli is from Atlantic City, New Jersey. WRONG! He is from my home town and attended Camden Catholic High School and graduated in 1970. Strange enough Camden Catholic is located across the road from the Courier Post daily newspaper. As fate would have it he didn't become a journalist. It was apparently his lust for travel that eventually led him into public service. Mussomeli attended Rutgers University for two years before dropping out and becoming an upholsterer. He then spent several months hitch-hiking through Europe. Upon returning to the United States, he attended Trenton State College and graduated summa cum laude in 1975, earning a BA in Political Science. In 1978 he earned a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers Law School. Mussomeli entered the Foreign Service in September 1980 and began his career serving in Cairo, Egypt, as a general service officer. Following Cairo, Mr. Mussomeli served in the Department as staff assistant to the Undersecretary for Security Assistance. He then served in Manila, Philippines as a consular officer from 1984-1986. His subsequent tours included: North Korea Desk Officer (1986-1988), Senior Watch Officer (1989-1990), Economic Counselor in Colombo, Sri Lanka (1990-1992), and Inspector for the Office of Inspector General (1992-1994), Political Counselor in Rabat, Morocco (1995-1998), Deputy Chief of Mission in Manama, Bahrain (1998-2001), and as a member of the Senior Seminar (2001-2002). He recently concluded a tour as Deputy Chief of Mission in the Philippines (2002-2005). Mussomeli returned to Washington D.C. where he will be assigned another position. MICROSOFT CAMBODIA When Microsoft opened an office in Cambodia the question is what were they up to where they going to police the illegal use of their product or what? According to sales account manager Kalyan Chhay Prak one of the objectives is to sell their product to large business concerns and banks that would like to avail themselves of Microsoft product's security features. WHAT'S UP??? Speaking of security features Pannasastra University in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce presented a seminar General Aspects on Intellectual Property Rights in Cambodia. From our point of view it was SOS (same ol $#1t) where the focus if how to collect money and not to protect Intellectual property rights. The responsible individuals lack experience and have a limited knowledge in the fields they are responsible for. It is a learn as you go along approach. Given the Internet is the most important element in today's business internationally you would think that Intellectual property in the most used medium in the world would be addressed. Not so. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications is responsible for that area and they were not in attendance. The Ministries in attendance included the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industry Mines and Energy and the Ministry of Cultural and Fine Arts. SAY CHEESE No we're not talking about smiling when taking a picture but the rise in the price of cheese at the Lucky Supermarket. After the sticker shock of an increase to $14.85 a kilo up from $11 it was time to seriously reflect on taking the doctor's advice of not eating cheese since it causes cholesterol and could lead to a heart attack. It is now a point well taken and a point of fact. It's reminiscent of a conversation with a Lucky Supermarket customer when we asked what product price increases affected him the most. His reply was wine, cheese and burritos. He added that he could do without the cheese. In Phnom Penh it's doubtful that anyone would give up their wine. NR SECTIONS MOST VISITED Well Buddy Miles sang it with the Electric Flag, 'My Mind Is Going Though Them Changes' and as far as our readerships is concerned there are many changes. All five of the most read sections have changed. Judging by the results of the sections most visited indicate a younger demographic in readers as well as upwardly mobile travelers. The greatest indication of a young readership is the American Idol listing ranked number four on our list making it a first time entry. The travel aspect is indicative by the Travel Tips ranked second and the Thailand section ranked third. That seemed a bit strange but brought up a point that former Grammy Cambodia CEO Glenn LaSalle stated when I made a point that Cambodians and Thais don't get along. He was taken aback and said that the planes to Bangkok on weekends ARE FULL with Cambodians. Well that may apply to the LEXUS LAND CRUISER or SUV with RCAF license tags crowd but not to the vegetable and fruit vendors in the markets. For whatever the reason the interest is there. Our Phnom Penh section is the only section that survived the changes moving on up from 3rd to first. The Feature section was a close sixth. For an International point of view in readers interest please go to the NR Top 10 for August ratings as they are quite different. NR TOP 5 The Top 5 most visited sections are: 1 . Phnom Penh 2. TRAVEL TIPS 3. THAILAND 5. CAMBODIA Previous Top 5 most visited sections are: 1 . Cambodian Sports 2. SOCCER - International Football 3. Phnom Penh 4. NFL (National Football League) 5. It's the movie that has been talked about, and about and about. It's the film that brought former American Idol castoff Jennifer Hudson gained the respect she deserves after she won an Academy Award for her performance. It's a film that brought together a mega star cast of Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx. Dreamgirls won three awards at the 64th Golden Globe Awards ceremony in 2007, including Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, and won two Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards. Hudson, won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Effie White. The film is a period piece set in the 1960s and 1970s with a primarily African-American cast; Dreamgirls is adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name. The musical was based on the history and evolution of American R&B music during the eras of doo-wop, soul, the Motown Sound, funk, and disco. In addition, the stage musical contains several allusions to the lives and careers of Motown Records act The Supremes, a connection the film version expands upon. The Supremes with Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson came to prominence in the mid sixties. In preparation for their first big nightclub appearance at the then famed Copacabana nightclub in New York City they broke their act in at the Riptide Club in Wildwood, New Jersey which was a town loaded with nightclubs that resonated with music. Since I was working with my group at another club I saw their act and met the Supremes. Their performance was magnificent and you could see they were going places and make it big time. Throughout the Dreamgirls film, a number of other musical acts depicted as allusions to or analogues of real-life R&B performers appear, among them Little Albert & the Tru-Tones (Little Anthony & the Imperials), Tiny Joe Dixon (B.B. King), The Family Funk (Sly & the Family Stone), and The Campbell Connection (The Jackson 5). Given the great Motown music and one of the highlights of music history this film is a must watch. Dreamgirls debuts of HBO Sunday August 31, 9 PM Hong Kong/Singapore and 8 PM Thailand/Cambodia. The film will repeat throughout the week through September 7. Check your local listings for the time in your area. NR TOP FIVE STORIES Last months Phnom Penh July column ranked number one and in doing so was our fastest riser. This column focused on the Dr Beat Richner DVD and it being televised on the Australia Network. In the program Richner made some strong points about the NGO's in Cambodia allocating 85% of their funding to their salaries. For outsiders this may seem strange but for anyone living in the area that is not involved in the incestuous new wave of colonialism it is obvious with the amount of establishments opening to accommodate these highly paid largely do nothing NGO staff. The other indicator is the fees of an International school education for their children where $12,000 a year and up per child is more so the norm. The Richner DVD "The Passive Genocide of Children" took three years to make according to the films field consultant Geraldine Cox who assisted Australian film maker Janine Hosking. A trailer of the film is viewable at http://www.drbeat.com.au. It is also available for purchase http://www.beat-richner.ch -- Dr Beat's Official website Our July 2006 Phnom Penh column ranks second. The failed Miss Cambodia contest is the highlight of the article as well as the contributions of philanthropist Toshu Fukami. Famed Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann is also a focal point. He made a guest speaking appearance at the French school's theater Friday July 7, 2006 and attracted an overflow audience exceeding 200. Molyvann's designing credits include Olympic Stadium, Independence Monument, Chaktomuk Theater and the Bassac (National) Theater. Three 2005 columns continue to hold interest April took the third spot, September the fourth and March the fifth. April column features the company Gold Quest who had a history of being criticized as being a pyramid scheme. It was an image they would have liked to clean up. September 2005 continues to rank in the listings though it contains nothing specific. The highlights include former Cambodian National football coach Scott O'Donell being a new face in town. Since that time he has departed and two more coaches have been appointed to coach the national side. It raises the question and the powers that be ever get it right. The March 2005 ranked fifth was the most surprising in the rankings. The focus of the piece was the two film festival presentations in Cambodia. They included the French Schools CINEMEKONG and Pannasastra Universities, Cinema Cambodia Film Festival. Since that time the Cambodia Film Festival is defunct. The column also includes CAMBODIA'S INTERNET - WE'VE GOT WOES. It notes that you would think that for what Bill Herod has done for Cambodia in bringing the Internet to this country and what the Internet has done in a positive way for the Cambodian economy, business' and government that he would be provided FREE INTERNET SERVICE FOR LIFE for. Not so. The reality is that appreciation is void. Also noted in the column is BERNARD KRISHER HELPS CAMBODIA.
INTERNET THEFT? In researching the findings we have found that search engines Yahoo, Google and MSN are all guilty of misleading the public. They have linked our story information to other sites without our permission. Those sites include Thai Visa, Washington University in the USA and UNESCO. We have tried to contact Yahoo regarding this matter but there was no response. For our story on Digital Divide Data titled Bridging The Digital Gap Yahoo linked our information to UNESCO and Washington University web sites as noted below. Why would a company that is valued at billions of dollars employ dishonest practices? 2. Who is responsible for manipulating information that is misleading to the public? 3. Who is responsible at UNESCO in permitting the practice? Yahoo used the same story to mislead the public to the Washington University (USA) web site as noted below: Cambodia (PDF) 13 James Loving, "DDD - Bridging the Digital Gap of Have and Have. The most flagrant violator is Thai Visa. We have contacted them in the past but they have ignored our request to take our stories off their site. All three of the mentioned search engines have used our story information and linked it to Thai Visa without our permission. Thai Visa actually stole our story and posted it on their site. In the past they not only stole our Cambodia By Land & Sea story but also used our photo. Since that time the photo is not on our story on their site. Google provides advertising for the site. The question is why would a company that is worth billions of dollars resort to supporting a web site that steals? The information of our information page on the Google site also had the following endorsing going to the Thai Visa site. ©2007 Google - Google Home - Advertising Programs - Business Solutions - About Google FRONT PAGE WITH THAI VISA MSN did the same.
