Eighteen-year-old high school student Hin Channiroth walked away with the 2007 Freshie Girl title and 21-year-old university student Chea Vannarith took the boys title
Sunday January 28, 2007 FRESHIE Boy & Girl 2007 Contest WINNERS Eighteen-year-old high school Hin Channiroth walked away with the 2007 Freshie Girl title and 21-year-old university student Chea Vannarith took the boys title last night at the Chaktomuk Theater in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The event was televised live nationally. It was a close contest in the sixth edition of the Freshie contest where Hin narrowly edged out the youngest competitor 16-year-old high school student Srey Malika. Both ladies attend the same high school. Hin excelled in cultural dance where fluid hand movement is a key factor. That skill enabled her to also win the cultural award. Her on stage poise was also a deciding aspect of her win. Chea also won the cultural award for the boys and also proved to be the best cultural dancer among the boys group. His smile and poise helped in the competition as he seemed to be at ease with whom he is. In his interview segment he noted how sports plays a big part in his life and suggests that it is a means to overcome stress in anyone's life. Srey Malika won the KMA (cosmetic manufacture) Award that was attributed to her excellent skin and make-up potential. In our opinion she is the perfect blend of what Cambodia is all about in ancestry and looks from their melding of the Malay, Indian (India) and indigenous people. Of all of the contestants she displayed the greatest sensitivity to the event and given her youth has a great potential to succeed in the arts as she matures, learns and develops her skills. She has a great look, good voice and pleasant personality. The finals competition was evenly split with eight university and eight high school students. In the final top six winners there were three high school winners and three university students. Other award winners include: Friendship - 17-year-old student girl # 9 Ms. Samut Roseka Rising Star (talent) - 18-year-old university student Girl # 3 Sun Channy Character - 18-year-old university student boy # 8 San Sila (also 2nd runner-up) Telecom Idol (knowledge of technology) - 18-year-old Wang Sandy Most Popular (SMS votes) - 18-year-old university student Chem Phirom Sereychantrea Personality: Girl # 8 - 18-year-old high school Hin Channiroth (The Freshie Girl winner) Boy # 3 - 21-year-old university student Chea Vannarith (also Freshie Boy winner)
Photogenic: Girl # 6 - 19-year-old Seng Oriya (also 2nd girl runner-up) Boy # 5 - 20-year-old high school student in Australia Ngov Sok Meng All of the Freshie finalist's pictures are on the Freshie page. FRESHIE ALUMNI SUCCESS With the 2007 contest put to rest the question is what will become of the entrants. Simply by taking the big step forward to try out makes them all winners in building their self-esteem and maturity. "They are brave," remarked Henry Siew of Evian water after a recent telecast. Evian has been one of the shows sponsors for three years. There are also expectations. "We're looking for a person to be a success to represent the culture and tradition of Cambodia," said Dak Sarin the Director of Culture Development for the Ministry of Culture at the Freshie Press conference November 23. The top three boy and girl winners earn contracts to represent Freshie for one year. While under contract they often do promotions and TV commercials for the sponsors. Winning the top prize doesn't guarantee success how they use their Freshie experience and develop their talent do. There are some following examples. Kanika Cham was the Freshie Girl 2005 winner and is now an executive for the i-mobil cell phone company. During her year under contract with Freshie she was involved in sponsor ads and public appearances. Vanda Meas the 2005 runner-up to Cham did the same but since her years contract with Freshie expired she has become a major TV personality on three television shows Cyclo Phnom Penh, Women Talk and Living Beauty as well as has appearing as an actress in music videos. In many cases the top three are not the only ones that benefit from their Freshie experience. Now twenty-one-year-old Yim Nara finished out of the top three In the 2005 contest, finishing fourth. He compounded his Freshie exposure and signed a contract with Cambodia's TV 3 that resulted in him hosting several TV shows including KTV Music and TV 3 Kids Club. Yim said of his Freshie experience that it "Improved my life with experience in a social exposure and training in the arts to be an actor or MC." And that it did. Yim and Vanda Meas were the new Freshie contest MC's. They will hosted the Freshie Final telecast on TV 3. They replaced 2003 Freshie Boy winner Chea Vibol and 2004 Freshie Girl winner Tho Sor Malin. In addition to be the shows MC since winning her title Malin was hired as a customers relations representative with Samart. She was also featured in a television commercial for a hair product and is currently employed by i-mobil as a Marketing Manager. Regarding her stepping down as the shows MC, "I want to give the MC job to young people." Vibol is considered one of Cambodia's major TV personalities hosting several TV shows including Fun Zone, 'Happy Teen' and 'Music World.' Vibol also ventured into the business world. He worked a half-year for Samart in corporate sales and with the PSI NGO in Phnom Penh with the MVU (Music Video Unit). The First Freshie Girl winner in 2002 Chan Thouen is also considered a major Cambodian TV star and hosts several television shows. She has also appeared in numerous music videos as an actress. As Evian's Siew said to the Freshie contest entrants at last years Freshie press conference, "There are no losers. If you are here you are a winner." The proof is in the pudding as they say and the Freshie contest is whipping up a new pudding of stars but most importantly preparing young people to be successful in life.
